What is Gum Disease?
Gum Disease, also known as Periodontal Disease, is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It's usually caused by poor oral hygiene that leads to the buildup of plaque — a sticky, colorless film of bacteria — on your teeth. There are two main stages of gum disease:
- Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage and is characterized by inflammation and irritation of the gingiva (the part of your gum around the base of your teeth). Symptoms may include red, swollen gums that may bleed when you brush or floss. Gingivitis is usually reversible with good oral care and professional treatment.
- Periodontitis: If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis. In this more serious stage, the inflammation extends deeper into the supporting tissues of the teeth. This can lead to the formation of pockets between the teeth and gums that become infected. The bone that supports the teeth can be damaged, and if not treated, it can lead to tooth mobility and even tooth loss.
Good oral hygiene practices, like brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and regular dental check-ups, are crucial for preventing and managing gum disease. If you suspect you have gum disease or notice symptoms, it's important to visit Topsail Dental for an evaluation and appropriate treatment.
